The current Township form, revised June 12, 2025, shows a $100 fee and asks the applicant to identify whether the transaction is a resale or rental/lease. The form states that permits expire within six months of issuance.
Zoning, Grading & Home Improvements
East Hanover's Construction Department states that a zoning permit is required for any change to a property and for all building-subcode permits. A grading permit is required before a building permit whenever earthwork is involved.
Flood & Environmental Considerations
East Hanover is bordered and influenced by the Whippany and Passaic river systems, and FEMA has identified special flood-hazard areas within the Township. East Hanover adopted a new flood-damage-prevention ordinance in late 2025 incorporating updated flood-hazard mapping and administration requirements.
Affordable Housing & New Housing
East Hanover's housing mix is changing. The Township maintains a dedicated affordable-housing page and adopted updated affordable-housing and multifamily-overlay ordinances in 2026.
